There should be as little space as possible between your eardrums and the pulsing diaphragm of the speaker trying to translate ethereal sound waves into vibrating pockets of air. one might consider wiring the bitstream of the output directly into the auditory cortex, thereby eliminating the inevitable distortions introduced by irregular vibrations of the eardrum. But such a brilliant invention is unlikely in my lifetime, so let's stick with the headphones.

Moki Mcfly is concerned with the fundamentals of electronic sound production. Sine waves, white noise, clicks, pops and beeps blurring the line of aesthetics that's jaggedly delicate, filled with melodic beauty but jostled by abrasive percussive hitches, undercut with sandpapery patches of ambient fuzz. It's a deft merging of gentle electronic tones and intricately free form rhythmic atmosphere, the sounds of old technology and the jazzy drive trying to reconcile its former gloss with its fading functionality.

But instead of celebrating corroded, neon-pastel magnetic-tape detritus for its own sake, the music on this album leans closer to an appreciation of the actual rhythmic counterpoints, quirks, and resonant qualities of frequencies. Alongside the moments that seem to revel in the flutter and crackle of old equipment are stretches that draw similar vibes from the sound of water to field recordings not to mention the texture you can get from good old-fashioned feedback. Yet even the moments where some songs feel secondary to the other instrumentation have a pulse to them, run through floaty guitars or humming synthesizers that converse with the ambient hiss in compelling ways. Still, neither the melody nor the ambience overwhelms the other. It's easy to hear the silky, billowy tones through the dying-battery distortion, but hard to picture what they'd sound like without it. Unlikely sounds are reappropriated and noise are looped until they’re essentially another instrument.

Che Ramirez aka 4Sight grew up in a very musical household. Born in Ireland, now living in Philadelphia via San Francisco, his grandfather, the Latin-American composer Emilio Ramirez Garcia, instilled a lifelong musical passion throughout the family, with jazz, salsa, rock and classical being practised and performed around him from an early age as well as access to a wide variety of instruments. 

An eclectic taste developed naturally… “My daily digest of music when i was around 9 years old was Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Nine Inch Nails, DJ Shadow, Tool, Rachmaninoff, and Debussy among others” 

His passion for jazz took him to study at the University of the Arts in PA, and the seed of 4Sight’s musical identity were sewn when he began to combine his jazz guitar playing with inspirations from the LA beat scene, and Brainfeeder’s output in particular. 

“Rather than trying to make something that would be true to a tradition like jazz, it was almost like I had the ability to mould my own unique sound and mood. I felt as though i was channelling an ultra-creative part of my mind that I had never tapped into before. This creative pocket is what is fanned out over 7 tracks that make up the EP. It 's an embodiment of me branching out musically and artistically and taking what I know in different directions, hence the name Dendritic: Having a branched out form resembling a tree"

As a child I believed two things. I believed that if I ran in the rain fast enough, the raindrops would not hit me, and that the raindrops fall to the ground to the beat of music. Whether you believe it or not, I forgot about it for two decades, until one rainy day I listened to the fourth instalment of GoodNetlabels Compilation… Moved by the music, and reminded of these two childhood memories, I came up with the title for the compilation, one that evokes the atmosphere of that innocent time.

So how do raindrops fall, then? Can we call it art? Reason dictates that they fall down as the wind allows them to fall, but perhaps such an adult perspective is not the best one here, and perhaps it is better to use our imagination the way the artists who contributed to this outstanding compilation did?
