Notilus is the new project of five established French musicians combining cinematic soundscapes, energetic jazz and atmospheric live electronics. With a decent amount of performances at several French festivals the quintet presents its s/t debut album via Denovali in spring 2017. The cleverly compiled repertoire varies from positively trombone and sax driven jazz parts with a deep sense for sophisticated melodies to calmer, melancholic soundscapes back to beat driven, dynamic, buzzy sound cascades. Sometimes the albums delivers a feeling of a soundtrack for a 70s crime movie - sometimes it sounds like an intergalactic, retro-futuristic trip - always with an ironic and positive view on the own creative work.

With Notilus, the five musicians embark on a journey towards the centre of the Earth, towards the pentaquarks, towards the tips of Pluto's icy peaks and beyond. The spatio-temporal ship made some stops on the planets Jazz, Trap, 70 's, Bass, Dark and Psyche. The infectious smile creating live performance of Notilus captured in ten diversified and timeless pieces.

Paul Kikuchi - Bat of No Bird Island

Paul Kikuchi is a percussionist, composer, and sound artist whose work explores a wide range of styles – from chamber music to soundscape ecology – while also considering specificity of site and material, differences in awareness and intention, along with aspects of history, experience, and community.

Bat of No Bird Island blends the textured and fragile sonic landscapes of Japanese 78RPM records, static and feedback generated by old walkie-talkies, and traditional instrumental composition in an exploration of identity, displacement, culture, and belonging.  In re-imagining songs from his great grandfather’s collection of Japanese 78rpm records from the 1940’s - and exploring and interpreting his written memoir - Kikuchi has created a work that is a modernistic homage to early Japanese immigrants in the United States. 

Released as a CD, limited edition 10” vinyl record, and website, Bat of No Bird Island is a multi-faceted project that combines narrative, artifact, and sound. Each release format provides a unique insight into the process and inspiration of the work, and a different view of the work itself. The CD and digital download feature the full studio recordings from the project. The 10” record (limited to 100 copies) pairs two of Kikuchi’s re-imaginations with the two original Japanese songs from which they drew inspiration. Finally, the website provides more context in the form of memoir excerpts, photographs, and recordings from the original 78rpm records, while also deconstructing music from the album into short vignettes that are paired with photos and writings.

Mentz is Stephan Raab, a jazz fanatic and music collector from the Netherlands making (small) musical collages for many years now. With roots in the early days of internet music (member of "tracker scene" groups like tokyodawn records and others), he developed a love for the limited possibilities of sample based music production. This concept is still the foundation for Mentz music. Building layers of found sound, recording other musicians and using these recordings as individual sample resources, he creates strange compositions with a unique warm sound. 

The Lines EP features four dreamy collages mostly produced and recorded in the summer before Mentz moved to Switzerland where he lives now. Main instrument on this EP is the trumpet played by Krisztián Ákos Muhari from Hungary, who studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague where he and Mentz became friends. Other musicians from earlier recording sessions featured on this EP are Wouter Suren (clarinet) and Bart Knol (rhodes).

Nanna.B - Vitaphone

"Danish singer Nanna.B is ready with her debut Vitaphone, a 12 track album, all created throughout 2011 and early 2012. The title is inspired by a Basquiat painting, and consists of the two words "Vita" and "phone", meaning "life" and "sound". As Nanna writes in the album booklet, Vitaphone: "is a testimony as to where i've been, where i am and where i'm going; South, North, inside, outside, inner 

space, outer space, somewhere in between and somewhere out between". The sound of the album is organic and warm with dusty beats and Nanna's voice as the two main elements . Most tracks 

are with live instrumentation, but a few more electronic and some all-vocal tracks also contributes to the 40 minute musical journey, where the more experimental sides of soul is also being explored. This is a result of the collaboration with the main producer of the album, Damp, and with an ambition to create an album sounding like a soul concert taking place on a trip to the moon, the two spend most of 2011 in an homebuild analogue studio in the countryside of Denmark.

Blocktreat - Traditionals

"Blocktreat is the solo-moniker of Vancouver producer and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Hoffman. A self-described control freak, it was just a matter of time before Brandon took a detour from playing in bands and producing other artists to concentrate on his own breed of sample-based instrumental music. Blocktreat draws from a diverse musical background to blur the lines between electronic and acoustic music.

Traditionals takes inspiration from the blacksheep of the electronic community like Four Tet, the Books, and Prefuse 73. The album was constructed from field recordings of friends jamming out bluegrass standards in the back yards and living rooms of East Vancouver. The fresh, spontaneous vibe of the source material is contrasted with Blocktreat’s signature ‘tiny equals beautiful sampling aesthetic. Brandon let the music take on rich variety of forms -- from mildly ADHD, to smooth, organic and evolving. Like a collage of blurry photos from a summer road trip with friends, Traditionals is a soothing microcosm of earthy, down-tempo goodness.

Brandon works in Vancouver under the alias of Gnomegrown Music, producing and performing with acts such as Miami Device, Colin Easthope, and Myriam Parent. The name ‘Blocktreat’ is a reference to the silviculture industry. Treeplanting is a job and lifestyle that, for a month or two each spring, allows Brandon to escape from the city.
