Nils Frahm - All Melody

Release Date: 26 January 2018

"For the past two years, Nils Frahm has been building a brand new studio in Berlin to make his 7th studio
album titled All Melody, which will be released on January 26th, 2018 via Erased Tapes, before Nils embarks on his first world tour since 2015.

Since the day Nils first encountered the impressive studio of a family friend, he had envisioned to create one of his own at such a large scale. Fast forward to the present day and Nils is now the proud host of Saal 3, part of the historical 1950s East German Funkhaus building beside the River Spree. It is here where he has spent most of his time deconstructing and reconstructing the entire space from the cabling and electricity to the woodwork, before moving on to the finer elements; building a pipe organ and creating a mixing desk all from scratch with the help of his friends. This is somewhere music can be nurtured and not neglected, and where he can somewhat fulfil his pursuit of presenting music to the world as close to his imagination as possible.

His previous albums have often been accompanied with a story, such as Felt (2011) where he placed felt upon the hammers of the piano out of courtesy to his neighbours when recording late at night in his old bedroom studio, and the following album Screws (2012) when injuring his thumb forced him to play with only nine fingers. His new album is born out of the freedom that his new environment provided, allowing Nils to explore without any restrictions and to keep it All about the Melody.

Despite being confined within the majestic four walls of the Funkhaus, buried deep in its reverb chambers, or in an old dry well in Mallorca, All Melody is, in fact, proof that music is limitless, timeless, and reflects that of Nils’ own capabilities. From a boy’s dream to resetting the parameters of music itself.

Words from Nils, October 2017:
“In the process of completion, any album not only reveals what it has become but, maybe more importantly, what it hasn't become. All Melody was imagined to be so many things over time and it has been a whole lot, but never exactly what I planned it to be. I wanted to hear beautiful drums, drums I've never seen or heard before, accompanied by human voices, girls, and boys. They would sing a song from this very world and it would sound like it was from a different space. I heard a synthesiser which sounds like a harmonium playing the All Melody, melting together with a line of a harmonium sounding like a synthesiser. My pipe organ would turn into a drum machine, while my drum machine would sound like an orchestra of breathy flutes. I would turn my piano into my very voice, and any voice into a ringing string. The music I hear inside me will never end up on a record, as it seems I can only play it for myself. This record includes what I think sticks out and describes my recent musical discoveries in the best possible way I could imagine.”

The cover art was taken by photographer Lia Darjes in Nils’ new studio and designed by Torsten Posselt at FELD. A series of these in-studio photos will be included in a booklet with a copy of All Melody."

HimeHime - Bath Texts

Release Date: 25 August 2017

"Hush Hush is proud to welcome Seattle-based electronic musician HimeHime into the fold with his transportive mini-album 'Bath Texts,' the most personal and accomplished release in the young artist’s already prolific career.

The alias of Mackenzie Simon, HimeHime began his musical journey with the guitar when he picked up the instrument at the age of eight. His development progressed while working as a children’s guitar teacher as a teenager, playing in his high school’s jazz band, and later jamming out in multiple garage rock bands. Tommy’s Guitar Shop in Everett, Washington offered him a welcome respite from school, providing a home base for lessons as well as the opportunity to mess around with various types of pedals and effects. This growing awareness of sonic manipulation, combined with his lifelong fandom of retro video gaming and video game soundtracks, further cultivated his budding interest in analog electronic sounds and composition.

His subsequent move into the heart of the city to attend Seattle University found his focus dive into electronic production, a newfound passion heavily swayed by the impactful early works of fledgling bedroom producers Baths, Shlohmo, and Hudson Mohawke. The cramped confines of a college dorm was the birthplace of countless late-night wide-eyed sonic experiments to find new ways to combine his early love of the guitar with his growing obsession with the vast capacities of electronic production. With a multifaceted sonic style that has steadily evolved over the last four years, HimeHime’s stacked back catalog offers glimpses into his bursting sonic imagination, serving up everything from early blockbuster chiptune anthems to shimmery heartbroken vocal-pop ballads to recent forays into aggressive club rhythms.

HimeHime’s expansive sound reaches new heights on 'Bath Texts,' yielding eight tracks that zone in on a lush fusion of emotive post-rock, glitchy electronics, instrumental hip-hop, and textured downtempo beats. A reflection of his recent post-college shift into adulthood, the release’s title and mood stems from Mackenzie’s tendency to de-stress after work with long baths and messaging friends on his phone. This intimate and relaxing sentiment carries throughout the hypnotic instrumental-heavy release, propelled by HimeHime’s crystalline guitars, enveloping beats, skittering rhythms, wordless ethereal vocals, and rich atmospherics. Along the journey, HimeHime receives guest assistance from three fellow Seattle area electronic producers: WMD on blissful opening track “Contrail,” Hush Hush alum Shelf Nunny on “Rigid,” and lo-fi hip-hop beat producer Mr.Shn on “Influences.” A bold step forward for the constantly growing artist, 'Bath Texts' will be released on August 25th digitally, on cassette tape, and CD, and marks HimeHime’s debut release for Hush Hush Records."

Notilus - Notilus

Release Date: 12 May 2017

Notilus is the new project of five established French musicians combining cinematic soundscapes, energetic jazz and atmospheric live electronics. With a decent amount of performances at several French festivals the quintet presents its s/t debut album via Denovali in spring 2017. The cleverly compiled repertoire varies from positively trombone and sax driven jazz parts with a deep sense for sophisticated melodies to calmer, melancholic soundscapes back to beat driven, dynamic, buzzy sound cascades. Sometimes the albums delivers a feeling of a soundtrack for a 70s crime movie - sometimes it sounds like an intergalactic, retro-futuristic trip - always with an ironic and positive view on the own creative work.

With Notilus, the five musicians embark on a journey towards the centre of the Earth, towards the pentaquarks, towards the tips of Pluto's icy peaks and beyond. The spatio-temporal ship made some stops on the planets Jazz, Trap, 70 's, Bass, Dark and Psyche. The infectious smile creating live performance of Notilus captured in ten diversified and timeless pieces.

2. Behind
3. Pop Porn
4. Kuku
5. Green Smile

PIEK - Despertar

Release Date: 15 March 2017
Label: Sincopat

“Despertar” is one of the most intriguing and beautiful albums to emerge from the Spanish’s electronic music scene in 2017. A celebrated debut by the Elizondo (Pamplona) based artist Piek, one of a kind emerged from the most versatile musical scene, not in vain he creates inspired by the magic of great names such as Sigur Ros, Moderat or Bonobo.
“Despertar” is the title chosen for the debut LP of this producer and dedicated music lover from Elizondo. One of a kind due to his versatility exploring into skittering beats and a magnetic electronic music. On the album no two tracks are wholly similar; each have their own distinguishing features and incredible songwriting. Are you awake for a unique journey into synth soundtracks, contemporary soul music, futuristic hip-hop rhymes and floating beats?
One of the virtues contained in this album is when the artist builds his songs around guest vocals, adding a unique panache but also sacrificing total control. When Piek identifies and aligns his instrumental aesthetic with the emotive output of his guests - Ria, Ryan Roush, Cheney, Kash, Hokhok, Zebulon and Jim Hast- the results are just amplifying and electrifying. “Despertar” contains also an audible gold featuring by the music-composer Fabel and a Tony Phillips poem.

Brother Ali - All The Beauty In This Whole Life

Release Date: 5 May 2017

Over the past 17 years, Brother Ali has earned wide critical acclaim for his deeply personal, socially conscious, and inspiring brand of hip-hop. Under Rhymesayers Entertainment, he’s unleashed a series of lauded projects, establishing himself as one of the most respected independent voices in music. The latest chapter in that celebrated journey is All the Beauty in This Whole Life, a 15-track collection produced entirely by Atmosphere’s Anthony “Ant” Davis.

"This entire album is based on the reality that beauty is the splendor of truth" says the Minneapolis MC. "Beauty in all of its forms is the outward manifestation of love and virtue. It soothes the soul and pulls it gently toward the truth it communicates. Every word and note of this album is intended to either reflect beauty, or expose the ugliness that blocks us from living lives of meaning."

All the Beauty in This Whole Life is Ali’s first official release in five years and represents the newest and most refined chapter of his life's journey. "Each of my albums are the result of the pain, growth and eventual healing that I experience. Articulating the pain and navigating the healing allows the people who really feel my music to travel with me. It's not only that we hurt together, we heal together as well."

Contrasting intensely heavy moments with joyous and grateful ones, All the Beauty in This Whole Life arrives right on time, to help heal a divided nation through the power of music. Ali wouldn’t have it any other way. "In times of great suffering in the outside world, the most important battles start from within."

Parov Stelar – The Burning Spider

Release Date: 21 April 2017

New Parov's album is out! Although I still prefer his work from older albums like 'Coco', 'Shine' or 'Rough Cuts' (probably just a nostalgic thing related to the fact that thanks to those albums I discovered such music style, right now more songs are just another similar tunes...) new songs are as always worth checking. Of course we don't find a revolution in the style which was more or less the same throuhout past years but for any 'electro swing' enthusiast this is another must have to put on the shelf.

Tracklist:
3. Soul Fever Blues
4. Everything Of My Heart
5. By MAn
6. All Grown Up
9. Beauty Mark
10. Cuba Libre
11. Black Coffee
12. The Ride
